What’s Happening in Mexico City? November 9 — 22, 2018

Here are six things you can do in Mexico City from November 9 — 22, 2018 — a little art, culture, music, and a lot of fun!

POR: Evan Upchurch

1. Feminist art at the Tamayo: Nancy Spero

Nancy Spero is one of the pioneers of feminist art. She created a visual language that she used to break with the artistic conventions of her time. Over five decades, her pictorial art has gone through different stages, capturing her view of women and their historical relationship with oppression, torture, inequality, war, and sexuality. The Tamayo Museum presents her work as a retrospective entitled, Nancy Spero: Paper Mirror. See the exhibition at the Tamayo until February 17, 2019.

2. Pixies concerts in CDMX

The Pixies return to Mexico to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album Surfer Rosa and to present their newest release, Head Carrier. As part of Youth Week, the first concert will be free in the Zócalo; other bands set to perform include DLD Mexico, Comisario Pantera, TITAN, and Rey Pila. The second concert will take place on November 13 at the Teatro Metropólitan, but if you want tickets, you must hurry up and buy them because they are going quickly!

3. Manufacturing Mischief by Pedro Reyes at Jumex

Manufacturing Mischief is a puppet show by the artist Pedro Reyes, starring Noam Chomsky, Karl Marx, Elon Musk, Ayn Rand, and Donald Trump. The piece talks about the excessive advancement of technology and the money of the billionaires involved, and imagines the distant consequences that could be possible.

Dates: November 9 – December 2, 2018
Showings: Tuesday to Friday, 7pm; Saturdays and Sundays 12pm and 5:30pm

4. Adrien Missika at Projectos Monclova

Through photography, collage, and sculpture, Aquí Allá Ahí speaks of those places that seem as concrete and close as they are abstract and far away, like the desert, where the notions of space and time become obsolete. Adrien Missika is a French artist, and this is his second solo exhibition at Proyectos Monclova. See the exhibition until December 22, 2018.

5. Zaha Hadid Architects at MUAC

Zaha Hadid was a renowned Anglo-Iraqi architect who with her creations revolutionized the way of designing and constructing buildings. She created buildings that use eccentric forms, and for the first time ever in Latin America, her creative process and architectural contributions can be enjoyed in an exhibition at the MUAC. This exhibition will be available until March 3, 2019.

6. Contemporary illustration: Gran Salón México 2018

One of the strongest drivers of illustration in Mexico City and Mexico is Gran Salón México. The fair is one of the most loved illustration events in the country, and this year it is celebrating its fifth anniversary. This year’s edition will take place at the Tamayo Museum and, as always, has a lot of exciting material in store. Go!
