Every traveler has their own idea of what makes for a dreamy getaway. Some find romance in destinations where relaxation is the main attraction, while others associate the thrill of adventure with unforgettable memories. But at the end of the day, what makes a destination romantic is the feeling that you have found your own personal paradise.
Whether you are looking to rekindle the flame with your partner or practice self-love by treating yourself to a solo vacation, these five undoubtedly romantic destinations scattered throughout Mexico will have you in love at first sight.
1. Holbox, Quintana Roo
Sand, sun, and warm tropical waters have always been synonymous with the perfect couple’s retreat. Located in the state of Quintana Roo, Holbox is a small island in the Caribbean Sea, near Cancun, where its turquoise waters and white sand wash away the worries of the mainland.
The island’s atmosphere is that of a fisherman’s town. While developed enough to be home to charming hotels, it is also a relaxed place where morning coffee can sometimes take up to thirty minutes to prepare. Another proof of island life? There are no cars on the island. The main forms of transportation are golf carts and bicycles — perfect for exploring the virgin beaches and lush mangroves.
For a magical marine life experience, visit Holbox between the months of June and August when you can swim with the harmless, and utterly majestic, whale sharks — found two hours from the island by boat. Stay at Casa las Tortugas or Casa Sandra for the ultimate vacation experience.
2. San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
A trending topic in the travel world, San Miguel de Allende exudes a special charm whisking you away with its colonial buildings and joyous atmosphere. This UNESCO World Heritage site is found in a beautiful valley in the state of Guanajuato and is considered one of Mexico’s most enchanting destinations. From the cobblestone streets to the perfectly lit cathedral by night, the city forces you to inevitably fall in love with all things Mexico.
Walking around is the ideal San Miguel activity. You will find yourself stopping to admire a picturesque sight or a sweet moment in the plaza. While strolling to get lost, treasures will simply appear in your path. From its numerous art galleries and shops to delicious, well decorated gastronomic options, you won’t even notice the hours fly by as you browse, eat, and drink the day away.
If you are looking to leave the center, where most of the city’s activity is found, take a 20-minute car ride to Viñedos San Lucas where you can sip on the property’s wine amidst a beautiful country landscape. Be inspired by the refined details found inside the walls of San Miguel’s most luxurious hotels, such as Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, and the boutique hotel option, Hotel Matilda.
3. Punta Mita, Nayarit
If you are looking for divine weather, you’ve chosen the right place. With its 320 days per year of sun, Punta Mita, located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, is the ultimate destination for couples — especially as a honeymoon hot spot — given its pristine beaches and luxury hotel offer.
The beauty of Punta Mita is that it can be as laid-back or on the go as you desire. There is a range of aquatic activities to choose from such as snorkeling, sailing, diving, whale watching (from December to March), and golfing at the world-class seaside course designed by Jack Nicklaus. If you are looking to simply enjoy the sun and relax, hit the beach or pool day after day with some sunscreen and a good book. Also, visit the nearby town of Sayulita, a haven for artists and surfers, if you want to shake up the resort routine.
Indulge in a candlelight dinner for two at Four Season Punta Mita’s The Rock, an intimate space on a cliff that divides two private beaches, set to the soundtrack of waves crashing only meters beneath your feet. For true luxury treatment, stay at the well established Four Seasons Punta Mita, Casa de Mita, or the St. Regis Punta Mita.
4. Tepoztlán and Amatlán, Morelos
While romance is often associated with sand and sun, the crisp mountain air can also do the trick. Tepoztlán has become famous not only for its rocky landscapes and ex-convent, but also its hotels nestled in the rolling hills, village festivals, and pulque (an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented sap of the agave plant). The neighboring, Amatlán, is the perfect complement to Tepoztlán’s vibrant energy and is known as a remote place of tranquility.
The must-do activity in Tepoztlán is to trek to el Tepozteco, an archaeological site consisting of a small temple to the Aztec god of pulque. In Amatlán, you can retreat to your hotel for back-to-back spa treatments, horseback rides, or spend the day having a countryside picnic.
For a romantic getaway, book a room at one of the Tepoztlán’s all-time favorites, La Posada de Tepozteco, with impressive views and rooms with jacuzzis. In Amatlán, opt for the quaint and tranquil Hostal de Luz.
5. La Paz, Baja California Sur
A destination unknown to many travelers, La Paz is located in Baja California Sur, only two hours from Los Cabos. It is home to a number of white sand beaches with crystal clear waters, considered by some as the most beautiful in Mexico. Apart from being a serene escape, the area also provides a surprisingly active nightlife scene and delectable seafood delicacies, all at much more reasonable prices than its more developed counterparts.
While you may arrive motivated, the most tempting activity in La Paz is to do just about nothing: wake up late, observe the infinite evolution of the waves, and stroll along the pier at sunset. However, for those that do muster up the motivation, its waters offer the possibility to fish, sail, and practice almost any other water sport imaginable. During the winter months, whales migrate to the area, making for spectacular sights.
Hotel options include Posada de las Flores and Casa Tuscany Inn — two small, charming accommodations overlooking the Sea of Cortez.
