Taxonomía, a Mecca for Mexican Design inside Hotel Carlota

Discover one of Mexico City’s hottest concept stores, located inside Hotel Carlota, only featuring Mexican designers.

All aspects of Mexican artistry have a long, rich history. From architecture and art to design and fashion, every creation seems to be crafted with a story to be told. Following a common trend found throughout the country, the small concept store, Taxonomía, honors Mexican craftsmanship and acts as a space where its products can be admired and taken home to enjoy.

Location

The concept store is located inside Hotel Carlota — a 36-room boutique hotel found on a quiet street in the Cuauhtémoc neighborhood. It is only minutes away from Paseo de la Reforma and also close to the lively, up-and-coming Juárez neighborhood, where you can find restaurants and bars galore. The hotel is modernist and, above all, a stylish place to stay while in the Mexican capital.

The Inspiration behind Taxonomía

Laura Natividad, a Mexican architect and interior designer who was part of the team that developed the concept of Hotel Carlota, founded the concept store in 2015. When asked what her inspiration was behind the space, she stated, “The diversity of design in Mexico motivated me to create a space where designers could exhibit their work in a commercial setting — a setting that hosted a wide variety of curated products selected for national and international consumers.”

Mexican Products by Mexican Designers

Before you walk into the boutique, there is one thing you can be sure about: all of the products are created by Mexican designers. Like all good concept stores, you don’t feel overwhelmed with options, but everything is so unique and stylish that you may want to take everything home. The products include exceptional collections of jewelry, art, fashion, furniture, decoration, and publications, truly making Taxonomía a mecca for quality Mexican design.

The Future of Taxonomía

With a store experiencing an ample amount of success, it’s only natural to question what’s next. So, what’s in store for Taxonomía in the future? Natividad responded, “I would like to maintain Taxonomía as a small concept store where the personalized service allows the client to experience a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, but I am not closed to the idea of expanding and continue to think of new horizons for the store.”
